Sussex, Kent and Hampshire are full of fantastic Christmas Markets and Christmas Events. See below for details of some great Christmas festivities in Rye, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sandwich, Leeds Castle and Portsmouth.
Rye Christmas Festival is on 12th December with a fabulous selection of fun activities such as a Christmas procession through the town, the Market, live music, Santa’s Grotto, mulled wine and even an ice rink! Rye High Street will be pedestrianised all day with plenty of space for craft activities, street entertainment and soaking up the festive atmosphere. We can’t wait…
If you prefer to head for a city break, Tunbridge Wells has a wonderful Christmas Market in the Pantiles on two weekends in December – 5th/6th and 12th/13th and 19th/20th. The organisers create the most festive of scenes; the smell of cinnamon fills the air! Book your lunch venue and then have a wander, a perfect way to do your shopping. Ice Skating is on offer in Tunbridge Wells for those who like to be active, from Friday 20nd November – Sunday 3rd January, 7 days a week (apart from Christmas Day).
Sandwich holds a wonderful Christmas Lights and Carnival Parade on Saturday 28th November with a craft fair, carnival parade, festive stalls, music, street entertainment and lots of food and drink. There will be a lantern-lit parade around the town and a Grand Christmas lights switch on in early evening. You can pop along to a lantern workshop on Saturday 7th or 14th, 10am – 12 midday.
Leeds Castle will host its second Christmas Market with German market style chalets and traditional carousel rides every weekend in December. Browse handmade decorations, beautifully made festive garlands and lovely presents. Delicious stalls of chutneys, jams, homemade wares and a wonderful array of drinks will be on sale. Bring the children to visit Santa and be totally entertained by other activities such as carol singers, jugglers and a Punch and Judy show.
Canterbury is a great city for sight-seeing and shopping any time of year, but at Christmas, it’s even more magical. There are fantastic Christmas shows on at The Marlowe Theatre and The Gulbenkian, not to mention the Advent Carol Services at Canterbury Cathedral on Sunday 29th November, and the Christmas Service of Carols on Monday 21st December and Tuesday 22nd December. There’s also an St Nicholas City Parade on Saturday 5th December (arrive well in advance for these). The Whitefriars Christmas Market will run from Saturday 21st November to Thursday 24th December.
In Portsmouth, there is a huge Victorian Festival of Christmas on Friday 27th November and Saturday 28th December with Dickensian-style snow covered streets, a traditional Father Christmas (dressed in green) stage show and a wonderland of Victorian characters and entertainment. Much more fun than shopping in your local High Street or shopping centre!
