Interview with some of our owners for our 10th anniversary

We asked some owners a few questions about holidays and holiday letting…

Mary Dolman from The Potting Shed in Winchester

1012589

  1. Why and how did you embark on holiday letting?

In 2014 we fulfilled a long term plan to put a small oak framed barn onto the spot in our courtyard garden where an old greenhouse had stood. The Potting Shed was born and it exceeded our expectations! Rather than leaving this idyllic bolt hole empty for most of the year the solution was obvious – holiday lets! Our good fortune was that Mulberry Cottages arrived in Winchester at the same time and they have enabled us to share this beautiful place with people from all over the world.

  1. What are the key elements for you in creating a really special holiday house?

The key elements for me are providing a professional but personal and friendly approach to all our guests. I was determined to offer the highest standard of comfort and cleanliness. I selected furnishings that reflected the origins of the building whilst creating a restful space for both business and holiday visitors.

  1. It’s our 10th birthday – how and where in the UK would you like to celebrate a special occasion?

We live in such a beautiful country but most of us have visited very little of it. For a special occasion I would like to go somewhere new that takes me away from my everyday world but within walking distance of great places to eat  – I certainly don’t want to cook!

  1. What’s made you smile the most since you’ve started holiday letting?

I smile every time that I get The Potting Shed ready for new guests – I love it and I love knowing that it is now part of happy memories for many people.

Clare Faull from The Apple House near Salisbury

2778490

  1. Why and how did you embark on holiday letting?

It started with the fact that we had a derelict barn sitting on a fabulous site with a panoramic view which we thought was begging for some sort of construction. We had thought that if planning was going to be a problem then we would build an open sided pavilion which could be used for al fresco parties.  Surprisingly we got planning easily and so the house took shape in my head.  Whilst building, it occurred to us that renting it out for holidays would earn us some income as a pension pot.

  1. What are the key elements for you in creating a really special holiday house?

The key elements for a holiday let is to make the house nicer than your own… otherwise why would you bother leaving home?!   I tried to make it the sort of house that I would be really happy to stay in. ie warm and comfortable and easy to use and attractive to look at. I hate the ubiquitous holiday let that has orange pine furniture and stainless steel teapots!

  1. It’s our 10th birthday – how and where in the UK would you like to celebrate a special occasion?

I’d like to rent a large house in Ireland or Scotland with views over the water and take all my family with me.

  1. What’s made you smile the most since you’ve started holiday letting?

When I get a text 10 minute after a guest has arrived at The Apple House telling me that it’s fabulous and they love it. The hard work getting it ready seems worth it then.

  1. Describe your holiday letting in three words.

Chill on-a hill

  1. Why and how did you embark on holiday letting?

My husband was listening to Radio 4 with Sarah Burton who was talking about the ‘staycation’ which featured Mulberry Cottages. In a very short space of time our sons had gone to university, the naughty boarders from the Millfield who lived with us had also left for university and my husband started a job which involved him travelling a lot and I was left in a big house which we didn’t want to sell.  Holiday letting was a good option as it meant we could still use the house when we wanted it.

  1. What are the key elements for you in creating a really special holiday house?
As as my son said after the hot tub arrived ‘This house fulfills my 17 year old self”s dreams’.  It’s still our home and the decor is how it always was but with a few more silk cushions!  We’ve created it with the aim to be fun and individual.
  1. It’s our 10th birthday – how and where in the UK would you like to celebrate a special occasion?
Ooh! That one is tricky as Hill House is a perfect venue for a special celebration as the hall and atrium come alive when there are lots of people in them.  But if it was a small gathering, I would have to say I would love to go to the beach house which you often feature on your home page, Coastguard’s Lookout with a caterer to take care of all the cooking.  They might have to row there, but lobster salad would be on the menu!
  1. What’s made you smile the most since you’ve started holiday letting?

Some guests who left a really lovely thank you card and an orchid.

  1. Describe your holiday letting in three words.

Paul Kelly, owner of The Barn at Banks Cottage

  1. Why and how did you embark on holiday letting?

Our two boys used to live in The Barn and when they left home the property was surplus to requirements being just my wife myself and the dog.  Also, I sort of knew I was onto a winner as so many different people over the years had told us they thought that we have the best view in Sussex.  It would have been waste not to have converted this the property.  Leaving it empty was not a good option and  it also makes me happy to share the wonderful views with as many people as possible.  So we gave the place a facelift and met with a few holiday letting agents to see what they would say.   We’re happy to have chosen Mulberry Cottages.

  1. What are the key elements for you in creating a really special holiday house?

Well of course the location is key.  Over and above that I want visitors to have a memorable stay at Banks Cottage.  So we have tried to ensure attention to detail is always in our minds, we try to make guests feel a little bit special and give them a holiday that they will look fondly back on.  That can mean anything from supplying them with luxury toiletries or taking time to chat with more birdwatching orientated guests, to inviting families to join us for a BBQ or sometimes it can mean leaving guests just do their own thing.  One thing we have found is that all guests are different!

  1. It’s our 10th birthday – how and where in the UK would you like to celebrate a special occasion?

I have always wanted to visit The Shetland Islands.  A nice holiday cottage would be perfect.

4. What’s made you smile the most since you’ve started holiday letting?

The response of guests when they first see our view is always a treat.  More specifically, our first guest was a keen birdwatcher but had never seen an owl.  Bang on cue on his first night, the barn owl flew past.  The next night we had a barn owl and a short eared owl – it was a lovely moment.
