As we welcome 2016, we also welcome the Year of the English Garden in association with Visit England.
What better place to spend a holiday than in a garden to call you own. We have cottages waiting for you, situated right inside gardens open to the public. Imagine the gates closing and you have the gardens to yourselves.
Peace and tranquility, you’re immersed in the scent and sounds of your very own private gardens that go on and on. Round every corner you’ll find a surprise – a beautiful hellebore, a magnificent magnolia stellata or a wisteria dripping with purple flowers.
Gardens in England were first created by the Romans who introduced the cultivation of plants for pleasure, then later in Medieval times, gardens were designed with kitchen gardens and orchards, an atmospheric area for monks to wander through and contemplate.
When we think of Tudor gardens, we think of Wolf Hall with it’s complex box hedging and complicated layouts. Then came the Elizabethans with their castle gardens, mazes and water features created wonderful interest.
From then on we have been enchanted by such garden designers as Gertrude Jekyll who created over 400 gardens and worked closely with Sir Edward Lutyens, building gardens to compliment his Arts and Crafts houses.
