The historic town of Rye is just 5 miles to the north of Camber Sands and has interesting winding medieval streets full of antique shops, boutiques and a vast array of pubs and restaurants. A working fishing port ensures a constant supply of fresh fish which can be bought directly from the Quay as well as the famous Rye Bay Scallops - a real delicacy.
Why not visit the recently opened Jerwood Gallery in Hastings, situated right on the seafront and nestled between the famous Hastings fishing huts and the historic old town. The Jerwood Gallery, little sister of the influential Jerwood Space in London, houses some of the most exciting paintings produced in the 20th and 21st centuries as well as supporting young artists through its charitable arm, the Jerwood Foundation. It is less than 40 minutes from Surf Lodge.
For water sports, Rye has its own centre where you can sail, windsurf or canoe, and tuition is available for those who want it. For the more adventurous why not have a go at kite surfing, there are several local companies which offer this and it looks so much fun! With two famous golf courses and a tennis club in Rye there is enough to keep all sports fanatics busy for days.
As you venture inland this area of Sussex and Kent boasts many wonderful gardens which are open to the public. Great Dixter, Sissinghurst, Hole Park and Pashley Manor will delight all garden enthusiasts and many hours can be spent exploring these gardens followed by the British tradition of afternoon tea and cakes.
For younger children there are the steam railways at Tenterden and also the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway which will transport you through wonderful countryside and give you all a lovely day out. If Castles are what you are after there are three of the most famous castles in Britain only a short drive away, these are Bodiam, Dover and Leeds Castle.
