This cosy cottage is in a great location from which to explore surrounding areas. The village of Sedlescombe has a useful village shop and post office for day to day needs. It also has a pub and a hotel. It is an attractive, traditional village that is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Half- timbered houses surround the typically English village green, some dating back to the 15th century. It's situated in the High Weald area of 'Outstanding Natural beauty', so has plenty of lovely scenery and surrounding countryside.
The local area offers a multitude of walks, including the 1066 walk from Pevensey to Rye, and walks through Whitelands woods. Many bridle paths offer lovely hacks across the countryside. If you're interested in trying out some English wine, visit one of the local vineyards. Sedlescombe Organic vineyard is on the doorstep, and Carr Taylor's vineyard just north of Hastings. They are open for wine tastings, tours and purchases. Sedlescombe is also home to a golf club, where non-members can enjoy golfing facilities. And Powdermills Reservoir is a great place for enjoying a spot of fishing.
If you are keen to explore further afield, there's plenty of choice. Rye, Hastings and St Leonards are all 8 miles from the cottages, and Battle is a mere 4. Rye is well worth a visit. It is a delightful small town with a high street full of charming cafes, restaurants, boutiques and antique shops. Explore the ancient cobbled streets with its preserved historic houses dating from medieval, Tudor and Georgian times. The Mermaid inn, renowned for use by smugglers, dates back to 1156, and if it's cold outside, you can sit by an open fire. Visit the Ypres tower, one of its oldest buildings, which is now part of the Rye museum.
The nearby town of Battle gets its name from the Battle of Hastings, fought between Harold the Saxon and William the Conqueror in 1066. The town grew up around the Abbey of St Martin, built by William the Conqueror following the battle. It is a 'must see' place to visit for all history lovers, and an interesting and educational place to take the children. It also houses many examples of Georgian architecture. Visit Battle Abbey and take an audio tour which brings the drama of the battle to life.
If you fancy a day by the sea, try out Hastings or St Leonards only. Hastings is a historical seaside town with cafes, bars and restaurants. It also has a theatre, parks and gardens. The castle ruins, built by Wiliam the Conqueror offers wonderful views of the area and English Channel. There's plenty for the children to enjoy with 'Smuglers Adventure' and the 'Blue Reef Aquarium.'
