The beautiful medieval city of Canterbury has much to offer with history at every turn! Originally settled in Saxon times it was later taken over by the Romans, whose presence remains with the largely intact City walls and various Roman ruins scattered throughout the city.
Canterbury was also home to Geoffrey Chaucer's famous Canterbury Tales which are well depicted in a museum entirely dedicated to them in the city centre.
The 'Kings Mile', which is Canterbury's most diverse and culturally unique shopping district is situated in the shadow of the Cathedral. This pedestrian-friendly environment has plenty of places to stop off, relax and shop, all in historic buildings.
The skyline of the City is dominated by the Norman Cathedral (which can be seen from the apartment) which, together with St Augustine's Abbey has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral, the Crypt and the peaceful Cloisters are worth a whole day's visit in themselves.
The pedestrianised cobbled High Street and narrow lanes leading off it house an eclectic and interesting mix of boutiques as well as all the main high street shops. An excellent new development at the south end of the High Street ensures that Canterbury is a city where you can shop till you drop! An open air market is held in the High Street on Wednesdays and Saturdays where many bargains can be found. The city boasts a myriad of bars and restaurants offering menus from all four corners of the world to suit all budgets
Canterbury is the home of Kent County Cricket Club and the award winning ground a mile from the City centre. It is the only County ground in the country with a tree within the boundary (a lime) and the Cricket Festival in early August is a must for all cricket lovers.
For golfers, Canterbury has its own 18 hole course 2 miles from the City centre of if you want to try your skills on a links course, Royal St George's and Royal Cinque Ports, at Sandwich and Deal respectively, are about 15 miles away.

We've had an excellent week, with added bonus of very good weather. The flat is all we have hoped for, and the location even better than we imagined.
We still have a lot to see and hope to return. Some information about recycling facilities would be helpful. Excellent public transport and bus station only a few minutes walk.
