The beautiful medieval city of Canterbury has much to offer with history at every turn! Originally settled by the Romans it was later taken over by the Saxon and later by the Normans all of whose presence remains within the largely intact City walls and various Roman ruins scattered throughout the city.
Canterbury was also home to Geoffrey Chaucer's famous Canterbury Tales which are well depicted in a museum entirely dedicated to them in the city centre.
The 'Kings Mile', which is Canterbury's most diverse and culturally unique shopping district, is situated in the shadow of the Cathedral. This pedestrian-friendly environment has plenty of places to stop off, relax and shop, all in historic buildings.
The pedestrianised cobbled High Street and narrow lanes leading off it house an eclectic and interesting mix of boutiques as well as all the main high street shops. An excellent new development at the south end of the High Street ensures that Canterbury is a city where you can shop till you drop! An open air market is held in the High Street on Wednesdays and Saturdays where many bargains can be found. The city boasts a myriad of bars and restaurants offering menus from all four corners of the world to suit all budgets
The skyline of the City is dominated by the Norman Cathedral (which can be seen from the apartment) which, together with St Augustine's Abbey has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral, the Crypt and the peaceful Cloisters are worth a whole day's visit in themselves.
The Cathedral's history goes back to 597AD when St Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory the Great as a missionary, established his seat (or 'Cathedra') in Canterbury. In 1170 Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the Cathedral and ever since, the Cathedral has attracted thousands of pilgrims, as told famously in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
Canterbury historic river tours chauffeured by a guide offers a real insight into the historic sites of Canterbury, such as a wonderful little chapel from the 13th century which spans the river, and is the oldest example of Franciscan architecture in the country, the 12th century Eastbridge Hospital and the King's Bridge (1134), the Old Weavers House, the Kings Mill, and the Cromwellian iron forge. And of course the infamous ducking stool!
Canterbury is the home of Kent County Cricket Club and the award winning ground a mile from the City centre. It is the only County ground in the country with a tree within the boundary (a lime) and the Cricket Festival in early August is a must for all cricket lovers.
For golfers, Canterbury has its own 18 hole course 2 miles from the City centre or if you want to try your skills on a links course, Royal St George's and Royal Cinque Ports, at Sandwich and Deal respectively, are about 15 miles away.
Canterbury Roman Museum reconstructions include a Roman market place, with a shoe maker, fabric seller and fruit and vegetable stall. There is also part of a house with its kitchen set out in authentic detail
Goodnestone Park Gardens nearby are considered to be one of the best gardens in the South East, 14 acres including woodland area and walled garden. Fine trees, large collection of roses and herbaceous plants. Connections with Jane Austen who frequently visited.
