Holiday Cottage in Dungeness, Kent Sleeps 4
This fantastic and very special Kent holiday cottage is in a spectacular position on the beach at Dungeness. The views year round are amazing and the owner has provided a telescope so you can enjoy the night sky at its best, the passing of boats up and down The Channel and even the birds for which the area is so famous.
Inside, the cottage has been completely refurbished and restored with a 30's theme from Art Deco mirrors and ornaments and glasses, with a comfortable chesterfield and armchair to sink into. Combine this lovely beach location with a wonderfully cosy woodburner and you can see the cottage is well worth a visit whatever the time of year!
The cottage is located in the quirky beach community of Dungeness, right on the sea front and near the famous lighthouse, giving it a unique feel. There is no other like it! Weather boarded cottages line the single track road leading to the lighthouse and the Dungeness station of the celebration Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway. The whole area exudes the old fashioned charm of yesteryear!
The owners have completely refurbished this Kent holiday home, lovingly restoring many of the original features of the cottage, which was built in the 1930's by a retired railway design engineer. Perhaps that is why one of the interior doors once graced the Ladies' Waiting Room at Charing Cross Station!
All in all, although the interior is modern and comfortable, the cottage transports you back in time both inside and out and is a truly special place to visit.
This property has been awarded 4 Star by Quality in Tourism.
The cottage is entered from the rear into a sun-room with conservatory sofa and chairs and a telescope for all to enjoy. A door leads into the cottage hallway, and then another door into the sitting room. This is the famous door from the Ladies' Waiting Room at Charing Cross Station and sets the scene for the style of this charming and eclectic cottage. The sitting room has a large Chesterfield facing the woodburner and a basket of logs will be left to welcome you! The mantelpiece houses a collection of driftwood gathered from the surrounding beach. The room has many original 30's pieces including Art Deco mirrors and a lovely display cabinet with china and glass. There is a formal dining table with four chairs in the bay window and TV, DVD player and Freeview.
The kitchen is a good size with washing machine, fridge, electric cooker and extractor fan.
There are two double bedrooms. The main bedroom has a charming king-size bed, wardrobe, bedside table, lamps and chest of drawers. The second bedroom has a 4.6 ft double bed, bedside table and lamps.
The bathroom is equipped with bath, separate shower, basin and wc.
Outside there is ample parking next to the house and at the rear there is a seating/dining area with table, chairs and barbeque.
Dungeness is a small community on the edge of the beach with a wonderful old-fashioned appeal and breath taking scenery. Fishermen still fish from the beach. (The owner of this cottage is one of them and if you ask him VERY nicely he might sell you some Dover sole from the catch he just brought in!) The community has an artistic and bohemian feel with clusters of weather boarded cottages, many with sculptures made of driftwood and other materials in their gardens. At certain times of the year, artists open their studios to the public.
From the cottage it is an easy walk to the lighthouse, to the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch station and café, or in the other direction you can walk to Derek Jarman's house and visit the famous shingle garden.
The Britannia pub is at one end of the road, while the well-known Pilot Inn with its renowned fish and chips is at the other. There is an art gallery, with photographs and paintings to be bought - mainly of local views.
If fishing is what attracts you, many sea anglers fish from the beach and there are boats whose owners will take you out deep sea fishing.
Further afield, Rye is within a few miles with its wonderful mix of cobbled streets, smugglers' haunts, boutiques and restaurants just waiting to be explored. For golfers, there are excellent links golf courses at both Littlestone and Rye. There is also a tremendous selection of water sports on offer including kite boarding and wind surfing with wetsuits and lessons also available.
Inland, Kent is known as the Garden of England, with some wonderful gardens to visit including the renowned Sissinghurst Castle and the beautiful garden and house of Great Dixter across the border in East Sussex, both of which are within easy driving distance, as is the Chapeldown vineyard, shop and restaurant near Tenterden where you can taste award-winning wines.
Dover Castle too is well worth a visit with its stunning fortifications and World War 11 control rooms.
All in all there is lots to see and do. Fore more ideas please look at the 'things to do' section of our website.
Refundable security deposit of £75 is payable. Short breaks available. As the cottage is close to Dungeness Lighthouse, you may hear the foghorn if it's foggy! Sorry no pets accepted.
