Local Information about Benenden, Kent

This self catering Kent holiday cottage is situated in Benenden, a pretty rural village in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Weald of Kent. This quintinessintial English country village has two excellent pubs, and there are wonderful walks in all directions for guests to enjoy during their stay in Kent.

Benenden is a lovely Wealden village near Tenterden, with a long, broad village green where cricket is played in the summer. The parish is located in the Weald, six miles to the west of Tenterden. Benenden is most famous for its girls' boarding schools numbering Princess Anne among its former pupils.

The main part of the village is focused around the green where cricket is played in the summer months and is bounded by St George's Church (a 19th century church on the site of a medieval building destroyed by fire), the village school, the gloriously fronted memorial hall, and the Bull public house.

There are two excellent pubs, the Bull Inn and the King William lV, located near the large village green, which is lined with attractive half-timbered houses.
The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, by which time it had already aquired a parish church, one of only four villages in the Weald important enough to do so.
If you are looking for a lovely day out the famous Cinque Port of Rye is half an hour with the lovely dunes of Camber Sands another 5 minutes drive to the coast. The larger Wealden town of Tenterden is 10-15 minutes drive; which is very popular for its historic houses quirky little shops and pretty tea rooms. Royal Tunbridge Wells is approximately half an hour away and is surrounded by glorious Kent countryside. In Georgian times, this historic spa town gained a reputation as the place to see and be seen. Today visitors to Tunbridge Wells in Kent can enjoy a relaxing day out, exploring the many gardens, castles and historic houses, shopping in Royal Tunbridge Wells, or by enjoying the wide selection of places to eat.

The attractive town of Battle is half an hour away; it gets its name from the Battle of Hastings, which was fought between Harold the Saxon king and William the Conqueror in 1066. The battle was so significant it changed the course of English history. The town grew up around the Abbey of St Martin which was built by William the Conqueror after the battle. It is said that William vowed that should he win the battle he would build such an abbey. The abbey was built between 1070 and 1094, and the high altar is believed to have been placed on the spot where Harold fell. Today the Abbey ruins and the battlefield are cared for by English Heritage and are well worth a visit. The imposing Abbey gatehouse built circa 1338 can be seen as you look down the length of the High Street.

Biddenden Vineyard is very close by, Kent's oldest commercial vineyard, produces Award Winning English Wines, traditional Strong Still Ciders and Farm Pressed Apple Juice. Chapel Down Winery near Tenterden is one of England's premier wine producers offering vineyard walks and guided tours.

There are a host of beautiful National Trust properties within easy reach of this self catering cottage including Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens, one of the world's most celebrated gardens, the creation of Vita Sackville-West. Bodiam Castle in East Sussex was built in 1385, it is a perfect example of a late medieval moated castle and provides a fantastic day out for all the family. Great Dixter House and Garden, a Tudor house with a famous twentieth century Arts and Crafts garden. Scotney Castle, one of England's most romantic gardens designed in the Picturesque style around the ruins of a 14th-century moated castle, set in a beautiful wooded estate.

As Kent has more castles than any other county there are lots to visit during your stay at this self catering holiday cottage - particularly the beautiful moated Leeds Castle, and further afield Dover Castle with its wonderful historic battlements and the secret World War II chambers dug into the white cliffs.

The historic and beautiful cathedral city of Canterbury is 30 miles to the north of this holiday cottage which is well worth a visit whilst you are in the Kent area.

The host and hostess at Freshwater Barn couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. Sophie even left us a freshly baked Victoria sponge cake, and bottles of Pellegrino water with tea for our arrival. The cottage was tucked away, would be perfect for someone seeking true quiet, privacy, and seclusion. Excellent and helpful service from Mulberry Cottages. I appreciated the co-ordination your office gave me, with your website, to help me find what I was looking for quickly. Your representative was wonderful, sorry I have forgotten her name.

Even though we have lived in Kent for 50 years, we have had a wonderful month exploring this part of the county around Benenden. The hospitality of Sophie and Ron was a big part of our enjoyment, and the delightful little cottage became our home. The wettest summer in living memory was studded with flashes of brilliant sunshine in this corner of the garden where we ate out at the sheltered arbour with benches and table and entertained many of our Kentish friends here.
Mr and Mrs Stevens- June 2012

The barn was just right for two, nicely furnished and very clean and in a lovely setting. Thank you for the delicious lemon cake! We walked and cycled everywhere. In the evenings we walked across the fields to the pubs. We will definitely be back in the future!
