Local Information about Wittersham, Kent

This self catering Kent holiday cottage is situated in Wittersham, a pretty rural Kent village in an area of outstanding natural beauty which can be found on the four and a half miles south of the pretty Kentish town of Tenterden and about the same distance to the south to the famous Cinque Port town of Rye . Wittersham stands high in the middle of the Isle of Oxney, which was once an island surrounded by sea water. The village sign shows an image of a longship, which refers back to the Danish invasion of Appledore in 892. It is very likely that the Danes occupied the Isle of Oxney, as a vantage point to view the troops of King Alfred the Great who it is believed were based at Newenden .

The Kent village has two good pubs ten minutes walk from the self catering holiday cottage, and there are wonderful walks in all directions for guests to enjoy during their stay in Kent.

The picturesque town of Rye is only a few minutes' drive and has enchanting cobbled streets, medieval church and beautifully preserved historic houses from medieval, Tudor and Georgian times. Rye is almost suspended in time and has a uniquely unhurried atmosphere. It has great pubs and restaurants and pretty little unique small shops to discover. You can even buy freshly caught fish from the harbour!

The cathedral city of Canterbury is 35 miles to the north of this holiday cottage which is well worth a visit whilst you are in the Kent area. If you are looking for a beach, the Kent holiday cottage is about 20 minutes from Camber with its fabulous sandy dunes and miles of beach and charming Winchelsea, famous for its picturesque village centre and great beach.

As Kent has more castles than any other county there are lots to visit during your stay at this luxury holiday cottage - particularly the beautiful moated Leeds Castle, and Dover Castle with its wonderful historic battlements and the secret World War II chambers dug into the white cliffs. Additionally the High Speed train can be caught from Ashford making London a 35 minute journey!

Cottage Guestbook

The owners are the most gracious hosts you could wish to have. The cottage is fantastic and the pictures don't do it justice. Well equipped and in a great location - it is a little treasure on the Kent Sussex border. We will most certainly be coming back.

Probably the best cottage we have stayed in, particularly the attention to detail. The owners are two of the most welcoming people you could meet . We can't wait to return.

We have just returned from a one weeks stay at Roundel Barn and what a fabulous time we had. Having stayed at many places over the years (both in the UK and worldwide), we can honestly say that this was one of the best holidays we have ever had. The barn is simply beautiful; the locations is gorgeous, overlooking open fields and the owners are the most lovely people we have ever met. There is everything you could want for in the barn and more. A lovely, huge, comfortable bed and everything in the barn is brand spanking new and of a high quality. The attention to detail is second to none. We would, (and have), strongly recommended this place to friends and family. There is so much to do locally. To fit everything in we were seeing different attractions/ locations/ sights in the morning and afternoon. The barn felt like 'home from home' and we did not want to leave. The owners Kath and Pip are simply lovely, so hospitable and kind. They have a gorgeous house next door and we can not thank them enough for their part in making our holiday very special. Book now - you will be very pleased you did!

My husband and I stayed at Roundel Barn for a few days over Easter. We were looking for a relaxing break from the City and couldn't have found a more perfect place. The barn has absolutely everthing you need - from a woodburning fire to a bbq. The owners were so friendly and welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. We are already planning our next trip.

I am the first guest. And I felt highly appreciated by the lovely, warm and welcoming owners. What a lovely couple. And what a lovely house, too! So many thoughts and so much TLC has been put into it, you can tell ,,, and feel. Did I mention the idylilic setting and the view? To die for!
