Local Information about Minnis Bay, Kent

This coastal holiday cottage is located in Birchington-on Sea, Kent. Birchington-on Sea is the perfect sandy beach situated a few miles West of Margate with an array of shops, bars and restaurants for your enjoyment, ideal for a day out from the Kent holiday cottage with the family. Margate is just a short drive away from this Kentish holiday cottage where you can visit the famous Shell Grotto discovered in 1835. Debate has raged about the Grotto's origins ever since: Some people believe it to be an ancient temple, other people believe it was the meeting place for a secret sect; Why don't you explore the Shell Grotto for yourselves whilst staying at your holiday cottage in Kent and see what you think.

Another wonderful place to explore is the newly completed award winning Turner Contemporary Art Gallery, with a rich and varied exhibition programme presenting historical and contemporary art from 1750 to the present, but always with at least one Turner painting exhibited at all times

How about visiting Sarre Mill during your stay. The mill is a typical Kent Smock Mill and was built in 1820 by the Canterbury millwright John Holman. You can explore this pretty windmill seeing how it works, then visit the shop and tearooms afterwards for a refreshing cup of tea and a scone.

Ramsgate Royal Harbour with its café culture is just a 10 minute drive from the cottage. You can also visit the quaint seaside resort of Broadstairs with its plethora of cafés and restaurants, and trendy Whitstable is just a 15 minute drive away.

For culture lovers Quex Park, home to the Powell-Cotton Museum is also nearby. You can also take a stroll around the period house and extensive gardens.

For those of you who love to shop, Westwood Cross shopping centre and the city of Canterbury are both within a 20 minute drive. Canterbury is a wonderful medieval Kent city, which is surrounded by the original city walls. It has so much to offer the holidaymaker including the Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey, both of which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

If you are not in the mood for cooking why not visit The Minnis Restaurant situated just a 5 minute stroll from The Beach House. The restaurant overlooks miles of sandy beach and has fantastic views over the Blue-Flag awarded Minnis Bay. As night falls you can sit on the terrace outdoor restaurant and enjoy beautiful sun sets over the North Sea, so beautiful in fact that the famous romantic painter JWM Turner painted the sky himself.

Cottage Guestbook

We absolutely loved the Beach House, especially the proximity to the beach and the table tennis table. The property itself is lovely as well, very spacious and tidy and it feels like a home not just a holiday property. The owner is very friendly and we were made to feel really welcome. Would agree that Minnis Restaurant was a bit disappointing but found the most amazing riverside pub/ restaurant called The Grove Ferry nearby. Would also recommend the Cupcake Cafe in Margate. Enjoy!

The Beach House is perfect! It is beautifully decorated and furnished, wonderfully equipped and absolutely perfectly situated overlooking the green and the sea. Minnis Bay is peaceful especially in the evenings and the local shops in Birchington were terrific. It simply doesn’t get any better than jogging along the sea wall first thing in the morning and strolling along it admiring the sunset in the evening. The provisions that the owner left us were generous, far beyond anything we would have expected (that cheese.....WOW). And all for around £700......and that in half term week....fantastic!!!!! It's worth a lot more than that - but as we want to come back - please don't change a thing!

Minnis Restaurant was hugely disappointing….but that’s about it. We all enjoyed the week immensely. Thank you!
