Whitstable lies on a part of the Kent coastline that has been associated with fishing and most notably with oysters for nearly 2,000 years. Fisherman's huts still stand on the beach that edges this delightful old coastal town, full of intriguing alleyways with eccentric names and pretty weatherboard cottages.
The bustling High Street and Harbour Street are lined with an array of boutiques, delicatessens, art galleries, restaurants and even an old-fashioned hardware shop. Maritime paraphernalia sits happily with the contemporary art scene to create an eclectic mix of past and present.
Whitstable celebrates is historic maritime heritage each year with a Regatta, Carnival and the Whitstable Oyster Festival. The harbour, built in the 1830's, is still a commercial port and early risers can watch the day's catch being unloaded from the fishing boats before eating it later in the day in one of the many popular seafood restaurants.
Slightly further afield is the vibrant city of Canterbury which is a lovely medieval city with the very best of both worlds! An historic cultural centre with two theatres, open air Shakespeare in the summer months in the stunning grounds of St Augustines Abbey, river trips in punts and walking ghost tours of the City originally founded by the Romans. There are many museums to visit including the Museum of Canterbury which is sited opposite the cottage. Outside Canterbury too, there are many historic places to visit with Kent having more castles than any other county in England.
The new Whitefriars shopping development offers a good range of boutiques and high street shops with the many smaller streets surrounding the centre offering individual specialist shops.

We were very lucky to be able to book your cottage at such a short notice and we found it very well equipped and suitable for our needs. Although we did not do much cooking and did not intend to, we were after a well earned break. In any case we had take-away meals and three closest to us, Fish & Chip shop, Chinese and Indian, serving exceptional meals which we enjoyed very much. We also found the location was just about right and the walks you suggested were very good, which Tashi found very enjoyable, especially the doggy friends he made.
Thank you again for welcoming us and explaining the local area to us. We will certainly consider your cottage to stay at the next time we are in the area and need a similar short stay away from Sutton.
