Canterbury was settled as early as Saxon times who favoured it because of its strategic position in a valley with two rivers. It was later taken over by the Romans, whose presence remains with the largely intact City walls and various Roman ruins scattered throughout the city. Canterbury was also home to Geoffrey Chaucer's famous Canterbury Tales which are well depicted in a museum entirely dedicated to them in the city centre.
The skyline of the City is dominated by the Norman Cathedral which, together with St Augustine's Abbey has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral, the Crypt and the peaceful Cloisters are worth a whole day's visit in themselves.
The pedestrianized cobbled High Street and narrow lanes leading off it house an eclectic and interesting mix of boutiques as well as all the main high street shops. A stunning new development at the south end of the High Street ensures that Canterbury is a city where you can shop till you drop! An open air market is held in the High Street on Wednesdays and Saturdays where many bargains can be found. The city boasts a myriad of bars and restaurants offering menus from all four corners of the world to suit all budgets
Canterbury is the home of Kent County Cricket Club and the award winning ground a mile from the City centre. It is the only County ground in the country with a tree within the boundary (a lime) and the Cricket Festival in early August is a must for all cricket lovers.
For golfers, Canterbury has its own 18 hole course 2 miles from the City centre or if you want to try your skills on a links course, Royal St George's and Royal Cinque Ports, at Sandwich and Deal respectively, are about 17 miles away.
