Beaches

Seven beaches in Kent received blue flag status in 2007:

Botany Bay, Broadstairs

A lovely sandy beach in a natural setting. It is ideal for families, especially children with plenty to explore. Bathing is particularly good and safe. There are also coastal/cycle routes to be enjoyed in either direction to Margate or Broadstairs, where secluded bays can be discovered.

Herne Bay

Popular seaside town with a long promenade. The central part of the seafront is set out in attractive seafront gardens and a central bandstand housing a visitor and interpretation centre. The beach is shingle with wooden groynes giving way to sandy mudflats at low tide and is a popular bathing area for families with amusements and amenities nearby. Beach huts are located on the beach to the western end of the seafront between Herne Bay pier and Hampton pier. Neptune harbour which is within 500m caters for all types of water craft and boasts one of the finest launching facilities in the country.

Margate Main Sands

The impressive stretch of soft sand is perfect for sunbathing and there are deckchairs and sunbeds for hire. With many traditional attractions such as donkey rides, amusement arcades, funfair and children's playground, coupled with a good choice of restaurants, shops and pubs nearby, there is enough to keep the whole family entertained.

Minnis Bay

With its large sandy bay and secluded character this beach offers the perfect mix of seaside facilities in a relaxed atmosphere. A safe family beach at Minnis Bay is ideal for bathing, with its patrolling lifeguards and separate areas for bathing and water sports. Young children are also well catered for with a well-equipped children's area and a lost children's centre. There's plenty for all the family to do, whether it be action-packed activities such as windsurfing, canoeing and kite surfing or simply enjoying the sea air and taking a gentle stroll along the promenade, or on one of the many impressive coastal paths.

St Mildred’s Bay, Westgate

St Mildred's Bay is a small, sandy beach with a tidal pool at the far end. Popular with visitors and locals, there are lots of beach chalets and deckchairs for hire. There is also a café/restaurant within easy reach and further amenities in the quaint town of Westgate.

Stonebay, Broadstairs

This is a great little bay with memorable chalk cliffs and a meandering promenade. The beach is ideal for rock pooling and discovering the local marine life. Disabled and pram access is available via Broadstairs Harbour which is locally renowned for its historic links with smugglers. The beach is peppered with chalets that are available for public hire and refreshments are available to buy on the beach. For those who want to venture off the beach there is a great local pub nearby and a wide choice of cycle routes and coastal walks to keep even the most active visitor busy.

Tankerton

The tranquil setting offers a rural getaway for those looking for safe bathing and well-managed facilities. From the attractive Marine Parade promenade grassy banks gently slope down to a shingle beach characterised by pretty wooden huts and an established sailing club. At low tide a long pleasant walk can take you right out to sea - ideal for paddling and exploring rock pools and sealife. Tankerton's distinctive grassy area makes a perfect spot for a family picnic or simply for relaxing and taking in the magnificent views.

West Bay, Westgate

West Bay and Westgate-on-Sea are sandy beaches that run into each other and provide safe shallow bathing, making this a perfect family destination. There are plenty of rockpools for those who like exploring and poking around, as well as some good coastal walks which take in the surrounding cliffs and rocky areas. For the less adventurous the café at the end of the beach has great views over the beach and out to sea.

Westbrook Bay

This sandy family beach has an abundance of attractions and the shallow waters are perfect for young children. The dramatic cliffs offer a fantastic backdrop and the amenities available are impressive, as is its cleanliness. Popular with windsurfers and kite boarders, it offers everything expected from a seaside resort and much more. With bowling and crazy golf to keep the children entertained and deckchair hire and an appealing promenade for adults to relax, there truly is something for everyone at Westbrook Bay. Magnificent coastal walks, an impressive harbour and marina make this is a must for a family day out.
