Owner Story: Pound Cottage & Annexe
Bobby Sharp had dreamed of living in a thatched cottage for many years and finally realised her dream a few years’ ago when she and her husband found Pound Cottage in a pretty part of Somerset.
The house was built in the 15th century and was originally one cottage with barns. It was converted into one large house about 1980...
With her children off at university, Bobby felt this was the right time to create a business using this unique house. However, there was lots of work to be done. Inside the house was very dark; decorated in strong colours, browns, golds and reds. To contrast, Bobby decided she wanted to work with neutral paint shades, which lifted the interiors and gave it a fresh feeling.
Other work undertaken as part of the renovation included replacing the wood burning stoves and their chimney liners had to be replaced in compliance with new rules for thatched buildings, lights had to be LED and the garden had to be cut back and replanted.
In the kitchen Bobby managed to create a charming and homely atmosphere with some clever finds, for example – finding the Mark Wilkinson kitchen on EBay, and the tiles were sourced at Mandarin Stone’s end of bin sales in Monmouth. By using skilled and patient craftsmen, she has made Pound Cottage stand out from the crowd.
Bobby is full of praise for the stonemason and the carpenter who remodelled the kitchen to fit the crooked walls. The carpenter was initally hired for a weeks’ work but ended up staying for 3 months. Floors needed repairing, cupboards needed building and the bathroom had to be rebuilt, a room inside a room as nothing would fit otherwise. The downstairs bathroom ended up 10” smaller than the original after having the walls straightened!
A dining table was designed by Bobby, and built by a very talented furniture restorer, John Hamlin.. Finished in limed oak, the table lightens the room and creates a wonderful backdrop to a family celebration.
‘Pound Cottage has given us a wonderful place to entertain, we make plans for the future and it also means we see the boys on a more regular basis – they love coming here and so put it in their diaries when we are having a family weekend here, they love bringing their friends too.’
Now Pound Cottage welcomes guests from all over the world, in winter it’s a cosy haven where you can relax in front of the wood burners after a countryside walk; in summer, the doors are thrown open and the terrace is the perfect place to enjoy drinks on warm evenings, listening to birdsong and planning the next day’s adventure.
This lovely house is in a great location for those visiting their children at boarding schools being a short drive from Millfield School, Sherbourne and Taunton – boarders love to enjoy a weekend in a house which is ‘home from home’. As for celebrations, Pound Cottage is just the job as it can also be rented with the Annexe, allowing 18 guests to party together.
