Owner Story: Poundgate Park House

When Liesha Yaz and her husband moved into Poundgate Park House, they had no idea that this property would form the basis for a very successful holiday letting business.  They had 5 children and had recently spent 10 years living in Istanbul.

Life at Poundgate Park was idyllic with 4 acres of gardens and woodland for the children to run free, a wonderful family house to enjoy and beautiful views across Sussex towards the South Downs.  The house had a 2-bedroom cottage in the grounds (known as Poundgate Park Cottage) with its own entrance and private garden, which was ideal to let as holiday accommodation.  Leisha and her husband set up their own website and the business was launched.

Liesha's first holiday let: Poundgate Park Cottage

As time went by, their children left home and went off to university and work and the couple found themselves rattling around in a six bedroom country house.  Having successfully holiday let the cottage, they turned their skills towards streamlining Poundgate Park House to make it into a very comfortable and spacious holiday house.  They worked their magic - the rooms are ideal for bringing together a large group of friends or family, they bought new furniture, linen and beds, painted rooms and updated bathrooms.  ‘We managed to get rid of a great deal of clutter which amassed over the years.’

There’s a wonderful relaxed atmosphere in Poundgate Park House, bringing old and new furniture together in a setting that would not look out of place in an interiors magazine. Liesha sourced some items from auctions and second hand shops, the large yellow wardrobe was bought from a house clearance which she then painted.   ‘The holiday letting business does take up a lot of time, even though we use Mulberry Cottages to help with bookings, we also have our own website which is very successful but we have to work hard at marketing, keeping our online presence good and answering questions from potential guests.’

When Liesha is not involved in changeovers and making sure the house and cottage run smoothly, she works as an artist.  Her paintings hang in both properties and add wonderful colour and interest.  She captures landscapes with huge dramatic skies, her style gives great depth with texture and colour.  She exhibits locally in Wadhurst at the Wings Gallery and has her own website. Leisha also works with interior designers and create bespoke work to fit in with colour themes and wall spaces.

‘We came into the business by accident, but it really works well with our lifestyle and it has allowed us to keep the house we fell in love with many years ago.’
