Staycations in the UK have increased steadily over the last 10 years, with people becoming more aware of the advantages, and the standard and availability of properties improving dramatically.
One of the key markets is pet owners who find it hard to go abroad – either wanting to travel with their animal which requires the inconvenience and cost of arranging pet passports, or having to leave them at home and pay significant fees for kennels. Staying in the UK in a pet-friendly property is the perfect solution!
Couples looking for a romantic short break also find staying closer to home far more accessible, both in terms of the travel time saved and the need for less organisation. A weekend away seems a lot more feasible when you don’t have to spend hours booking flights and travelling there!
For larger groups wanting to get together, often arriving from several different parts of the country, again holidaying in the UK saves a lot of logistical headaches – particularly for the organiser wanting to keep it as simple as possible.
The option of a staycation for parents means shorter journeys with the kids (= fewer “Are we nearly there yet’s”), and avoiding paying for flights for the whole family, a particularly expensive cost during the school holidays.
Visit Britain have just published statistics for 2017 which shows yet again an increase in overseas visitors to the UK fuelled by the low exchange rate and the ever-present lure of our heritage. For us, the key areas for European visitors are for those properties within an hour or two of the key ferry ports and terminals such as Dover, Felixstowe, Newhaven and Portsmouth and honeypot areas like the Cotswolds that are much sought after. This is a great market you can tap into if you own a holiday let in the South East.
Lastly, let’s not forget that England is a beautiful country in itself with so much to discover! We have a deep and rich heritage, and our core areas for holiday cottages in Kent, Sussex, the South West and the Cotswolds all have so much to offer; steeped in history with an abundance of castles, national parks, events, great walking opportunities, and so many pretty villages, bustling towns and cosmopolitan cities in and around which our properties lie. Not to mention some wonderful houses - a reason in itself for guests choosing to book them! And of course the growing band of festivals and events to visit.
In general for all guests, because the journey is not as expensive when compared to going abroad they can justify spending a little more on a fantastic property. This is why we are always on the lookout for quality self-catering homes to add to our portfolio. Any additional features such as wood burners, games rooms, artwork, hot tubs, swimming pools, unusual designs/quirks and fantastic locations – to name but a few – are great extras that are popular amongst our guests and match our brand very well – and in this way, together we continue to stand out from the crowd.
