Suffolk, with its big skies and fabulous farmland, has some of the most beautiful country cottages in England. If you are planning a Spring break, you have chosen a wonderful destination. The landscape and peace of this East Anglian county is off the beaten track, it is only when travelling to up to Norfolk that you will chance upon it! So let’s tell you more about the fun you can have in Suffolk!
Cycling – because of the nature of the landscape, ie not huge hills, Suffolk is the perfect place to bring your bike. There are the most darling villages dotted around, and cycling from one pub to the next it a great way to spend a day or two.
Walking – The Suffolk Walking Festival is being held in May, they have an exciting programme of over 90 walks for you in this year’s Suffolk Walking festival. Varied in length and degrees of difficulty, the walks are themed and many include refreshments such as coffee and tea and homemade cake.
Star gazing – Orwell Park Observatory is opening its doors to all, come and meet members of OASI and (weather permitting) look at the night sky through various telescopes and binoculars. If the weather is inclement, we show visitors around the Observatory and run slide-shows with an astronomical theme.
Museums – Suffolk has so much history and heritage to find out about, and where better to start than at one of the local museums? From railway to fishing trawler there are more than 50 of them and they come in all shapes and sizes. Each is full of fascinating objects and stories that help to put flesh on the bones of history, from prehistoric times to the computer age.
Sutton Hoo – set in 255 acre estate, this awe-inspiring Anglo-Saxon royal burial site with far-reaching views over the river Deben, is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. There’s the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber, stunning replica treasures and original finds from one of the mounds, including a prince’s sword.Look inside the Edwardian house or enjoy the beautiful seasonal colours on the estate walks.
Farmers markets, country fairs and vintage shopping – Whether your interest is in local food, hand made crafts or antique finds, there’s something for everyone.
