“My amazing weekend in Suffolk” A blog by Sarah, the director of Mulberry Cottages.
“We have just spent an amazing weekend in Aldeburgh – we thought we were going to spend time wandering by the seaside, a bit of golf, some shopping but instead we found ourselves in the midst of much excitement, it was the Aldeburgh Music Festival and the highlight of this years event was Aldeburgh’s own Benjamin Britten and his opera ‘Peter Grimes’, staged on the beach to celebrate his centenary.
The setting is staggeringly beautiful with the stage in the middle of the working fishing boats, and those wonderful light filed sunsets that East Anglia is so famous for, giving an eerie light to the start of this wonderful opera.
Locals sat on deckchairs among the fishing boats looking out to sea and the ‘paying guests’ sat in the main seating, the atmosphere was inclusive and special and stragglers could hear the music throughout the town serenading them to join in and be part of it all.
The whole town has embraced the festival with an amazing array of art pop ups in the homes of the many artists who live and work in Aldeburgh from the printmaker Anna Toppin to the wonderful photography of Tom Southern. The building works have also now been finished at The Red House, Britten and Peter Piers home in Aldeburgh, where a wonderful museum has been opened and you can even visit Britten’s studio and library in the grounds. Read all about ‘what to do in Suffolk’ in our Things to do section.
It is lovely, adding a new dimension to a weekend away and with the festival continuing throughout the month Aldeburgh is well worth a visit!”
Fancy experiencing Aldeburgh like Sarah and her family did, take a UK holiday at Moorings cottage which sleeps up to 14 people and located just a few minutes walk from the beach, the perfect location for a bucket and spade holiday.
