An ideal retreat: Great Higham Barn Complex by Catherine Norris
The Great Higham Barn complex, located on the outskirts of Faversham in Kent, is an ideal retreat for large families or even couples.
The self-catering holiday complex consists of four buildings, which can be let out individually or together, perfect for those special occasions: Great Higham Barn (sleeps 18+8), Great Higham Oast (sleeps 10), Cherry Cottage (sleeps 2+2) and Plum Cottage (sleeps 2+2). They are all pet-friendly, too.
There are several outside seating areas, games area, playstation, enormous kitchen and dining space in the main barn, swimming pool, wood-fired hot tub, tennis court and a large garden.
The large enclosed garden offers an escape for everyone … children can become an Andy Murray junior, or take a dip in the swimming pool, whilst the adults can sit back, relax and enjoy the breathtaking and idyllic Kent setting.
The barns are in excellent condition and furnished to the highest standard, with a modern and comfortable interior and oak beams running throughout. Charming and enjoyable.
Enchanting woodland paths and bridleways surround the complex, so you can explore more of the Kent countryside. During the summer and spring months, the Garden of England is enriched with fragrance, vibrancy and tranquillity.
These self-catering holiday cottages are near several historic sites, including the Maison Dieu, the Fleur de Lis Museum and Gallery, St Augustine’s Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral, all with excellent ratings on tripadvisor.
Faversham is also home to the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale Farm, where you can tour the beautiful fruit orchards and taste the bursting flavours of the fruit. During the summer months, Fruit Festivals are held within the picturesque setting and there are summer activities for the whole family to enjoy.
If you fancy something a bit stronger, head to Britain’s oldest brewery – Shepherd Neame – to observe the process of the traditional beer-making and sample the beautifully refreshing beers.
For all garden lovers, walkers and explorer’s, Kent has plenty of enchanting gardens to visit, including the local Mount Ephraim Gardens at Hernhill, Doddington Place Gardens and Belmont House, which are all near Great Higham Barn. There is an abundance of colour and fragrance throughout each season. And a drink to accompany the time of day and your fancy … cream tea, fresh fruit juice, traditional cider or beer. There are also the “world class, interesting, distinctive and award-winning” wines of Chapel Down in Tenterden, a winery and restaurant, only 28 miles from Faversham.
Let’s not forget about the stunning Kent coastline – the North Downs and South Downs – an area of outstanding natural beauty. Spectacular beaches are located on the Kent coastline, which are well worth visiting during your stay at Great Higham Barn. Visit the famous oyster town of Whitstable or relax on sandy beach of Broadstairs.
