After a busy spell at work and a fairly important birthday looming for my boyfriend Charlie (35!) we decided to treat ourselves to a week at The Barn in Molash, Kent.
After a great chat with Anamaria at Mulberry Cottages and hearing that the barn offered ample space (sleeps 8+2), looked ultra contemporary yet with heaps of architectural charm, we decided this self-catering holiday cottage would be the ideal place not only for us to enjoy a lavish stay (just the two of us!), but also great for entertaining friends and family that were going to come and gate crash throughout the week.
We arrived in the afternoon on Saturday to a lovely gift from the owner of wine and chocolates which we promptly opened and enjoyed whilst wandering all the rooms and nooks in the barn. It was such a gorgeous space!
The first evening we had to ourselves and decided on a romantic dinner for two next door at The George – It also appeared that they have a sixth sense for knowing those who stay at the barn – we were told many stroll in on their first day whilst settling in.
Day two was Charlie’s birthday and we woke up and enjoyed a croissant and coffee on the terrace. We ordered groceries to be delivered and the cleaner was able to receive them for us when the previous guests left on the Saturday (how nice!).
We decided on spending a lazy day at The barn with various drop in friends who brought an array of lovely gifts and we delighted in giving everyone the “grand” tour.
By the late afternoon we took our bikes around the area down to Kings Wood which is enormous!
During which time I had sneakily arranged for the family to go back to the Barn and set up a surprise party! When we returned, we had a superb afternoon stuffing ourselves silly with home made cakes and nibbles and entertaining my sister inlaws little baby girl – who would have known a large space and a couple of pink balls would be so much fun!
Day three we had the mad friends party evening to plan but first a cookery course with the local chef and owner of a number of super restaurants that we often visit. We learnt a Spanish and French style tapas menu including the tastiest meatballs and Welsh Rabbit… yum! By the evening we had produced a superb feast and the kitchen had been a great bit of fun, loads of space, friends passing by who could enjoy sitting at the dining table looking on whilst we were trying to be creative.
We had a fabulous evening and all ate from the amazing solid wood dining table which aerates a feature with modern stark red and white chairs which are surprisingly comfy!
We also hired a hot tub which we were thrilled to discover could fit under the overhang right by the patio – great for the stormy evening we had, which was rather exciting from the tub in the dark.
Day four we invited more friends round to enjoy playing on our Wii on the Barn’s huge big screen TV and in between took turns in the tub with the champers. We even managed some more cake – my friend Hazel’s “death by choc” has got to be the best ever!
Day five and six were about rest and relaxation, off again to The George and later to the city in Canterbury to catch a show at The Marlowe Theatre and to see the chef at The Parrot, the oldest pub in Canterbury. It was absolutely fantastic and a perfect finish to our wonderful week at The Barn in Molash.
On our last day we were both very sad to leave all the pampering of a four star property and memories for a life time… thank you to the owners Paula and Marim and of course Mulberry Cottages for recommending us this wonderful holiday cottage.
