It is easier than you think to bring your pet on holiday to the UK, here in Britain we are a nation of dog and cat lovers so it is the ideal destination for you lovely furry friend. Infact, he or she will probably get more attention than anyone else in the family!!
We have often taken our dog on holiday as she is such an important part of the family, in fact we have taken more photos of her than anyone else in the group (or the famous landmarks!).
To go in or out of the UK you’ll need an EU Pet Passport. The passport shows that your pet has been microchipped, had a rabies vaccine and a satisfactory blood test showing the vaccine worked.
There are a few simple steps to follow when travelling to or returning to the UK from another EU or non-EU listed country. Your pet needs…
You must wait 21 days from the date of the rabies vaccination before travelling – it used to be 6 months, so much easier now!
If entering the UK, get a treatment tapeworm. This is a simple inexpensive procedure but very important. You must do this 1-5 days before you check in. The check must be recorded in your pet’s passport.
So here’s my checklist…
- a microchip
- a rabies vaccination(make sure your pet is microchipped first or the vaccination won’t count)
- a pet passportor official third country veterinary certificate
- tapeworm treatment(for dogs only)
- You must also use an authorised carrier and an approved route.
