The lights are shining in Regent Street and the tradition of wonderfully decorated department store windows is in full swing in Oxford Street – it is the place to be for your Christmas shopping or post-Christmas shopping!
You may feel very unfestive at the thought of trailing up and down your local high street, you can visualise all the shops and know what gifts they stock. You may spend so much time at a computer screen at work, the last thing you feel like doing is internet Christmas shopping. So why not make a weekend of it and see the sights of our Capital City at the same time. If you prefer to visit one shop for all your Christmas shopping, head for Liberty (Regent St), Selfridges or John Lewis (Oxford St). I was in Regent Street last weekend, it was buzzing, children pouring out of Hamleys, full of excitement.
Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane are great places to hunt for presents, especially for on trend independently crafted gifts (good for tricky teenagers).
If you need to get into the Christmassy spirit of things, pop down to The South Bank Centre where they have opened the Christmas Market with 80 wooden chalets filled with festive food, drink, gifts and treats run along the twinkling riverside. Enjoy mulled wine, bratwurst and ginger bread whilst taking in the lights, sights and sounds of London at Christmas time.
There really is so much to do and see… book a show, dinner in one of the many superb restaurants, ice skating at Somerset House, see the sparkling lights of London from the London Eye or take the children to Madame Tussauds, the list is endless!
We have a wonderful holiday apartment in the East End of London called Polly’s Place, the perfect base for a weekend away in the capital. Polly’s Place is a s a wonderful ground floor, art deco apartment in the old De Havilland Building. It sleeps 4 and is also a pet-friendly holiday cottage.
Shopping online is NOT the same, ok it may be simpler, less fuss and easier on the feet, but it is not the same as browsing through lovely items that you can actually touch!
