For those of us who love wine, a trip to a vineyard or winery whilst on holiday is a real treat, so interesting (and delicious!)
The English wine industry is going from strength to strength and this wonderful chalky escarpments of Kent and Sussex has been likened to the Champagne region of France.
Over 20 years ago Oz Clark referred to this area as the perfect climate to create the sparkling English wines we enjoy today.
Here are a few that we recommend:
The Chapel Down Winery, Tenterden, Kent
Produced in Kent using grapes from their own and partner vineyards across the South East of England, Chapel Down creates world-class Traditional Method sparkling wines and a range of still wines and craft beers. Chapel Down has enormous support from leading chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver, as well as institutions such as the Royal Opera House and RAC club and is England’s leading wine producer. Chapel Down Winery opens it doors to visitors who would like a tour around the vineyard.
Carr Taylor Vineyard, Hastings, Sussex
A long-established, friendly, family-run business, Carr Taylor run organised tours and will welcome the individual who just turn up on the day. As one of the first commercial vineyards in this country (ignoring the vineyards that existed in Roman times), they also have many decades of experience dedicated to perfecting the art of crafting fine English wines.
Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard, Robertsbridge, Sussex
Visitors to Sedlescombe enjoy a visit to this part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where they get to see organic and biodynamic farming in action. Following a trail around 3 vineyards and an ancient English woodland visitors have a tour of the Winery followed by a visit to ‘Bar-in-the Barn’ for the tasting of a range of whites, red and sparkling wines.
Hush Heath Winery, Tonbridge, Kent
Hush Heath offers self guided walks and organised tours. Throughout the warmer months or by special request in the off-season, our winery experts offer guided vineyard tours of Hush Heath Estate from 11am to 5pm. You will discover the history of the estate and the principles of viticulture as interpreted from Champagne which are imperative to the quality of the wines.
Bolney Wine Estate, Bolney, Sussex
At Bolney Wine Estate, you can take a stroll round the 40 acres of vines, and savour the air, light and soil that give their white, red and sparkling English wines their unique, award-winning character and quality. Set on a hilltop mentioned in the Domesday Book, and surrounded by beautiful West Sussex countryside, their vineyard will leave you relaxed, informed and inspired.
Rathfinny Wine Estate, Polegate, Sussex
Join a tour of Rathfinny Wine Estate where you can find out how they turn their grapes into Sussex sparkling wine. During the tour you can learn about the vineyard year and the various processes in the purpose built Winery. The tour will start and finish at The Gun Room situated in the historic village of Alfriston.
A stroll through the vines will allow you to fully appreciate the position Rathfinny holds in this iconic landscape. You will be able to explore the vineyard, the history and wildlife of Rathfinny Wine Estate.
