Ideas for visiting the UK countryside… bluebell walks

It’s a magical time in the ancient British woodlands and what could be more relaxing than visiting one of these fabulous areas of our country and immerse yourself in the scent and vibrant colour that carpets the ground.

We have put together some of our favourite woodlands to explore, and if you feel like a few days away, you could always stay in one of our Mulberry Cottages, totally relaxing in this lovely time of year.

 

Lanhydrock, Cornwall

The estate is well worth exploring too, with ancient woodlands and peaceful riverside paths. There are also off-road cycle trails, with special routes for families and novice riders, and you can even hire a bike from us to make the most of this opportunity. We have wonderful cottages in Cornwall, it’s the perfect time of year to have a break and the countryside and coast look amazing.

Nymans West Sussex

There is no better place to feel the awakening of spring than in the woods. The air is warming, the ground is carpeted with wild flowers, swathes of anemones, daffodils and bluebells and birds fill the air with song whilst streams and cascades run freely. Brush away those winter cobwebs and lift your spirits with a walk down into the Sussex woods.  Have a look at our Sussex holiday cottages, so much to see and do in the county.

Sissinghurst Castle, Kent

The estate at Sissinghurst is home to some 126 million bluebells approximately (they have lost count!). Visit the woodland at this beautiful time of year, they run guided walks with their knowledgeable ranger.  With plenty of other gardens in the county, Kent is an ideal destination for a lovely break in the country and the gardens look magnificent at this time of year. Hatchlands Park, Surrey

This circular walk, which is under 2 miles, follows the edge of the park and then cuts across the centre of the estate through woodland and open parkland with distant views of the house and the wider Surrey countryside. The show-stopper on this walk is the brand new carpet of bluebells which burst into bloom at the beginning of May.

Winkworth Arboretum, Surrey

In spring large areas of the arboretum are covered by a stunning carpet of bluebells.  At weekends the car park can get very busy, so if possible they recommend visiting on a weekday during the bluebells.

 

Longwood, Somerset

Long Wood is the most stunning ancient bluebell wood in the Cheddar complex. It’s just lovely, an easy walking trail will take you through spectacular displays of bluebells and the trail is dotted with other woodland flowers including orchids, wood anemone and yellow archangel, with the pervasive scent of wild garlic in the air this Spring

Stourhead, Wiltshire  This is now home to a variety of wildlife and flowers, there’s a chance you may see a flock of Wiltshire Horn sheep grazing there, helping to maintain the cleared site. The mature woodland surrounding the camp is home to lots of varieties of bird including nuthatches, wrens, long tailed tits, thrushes, woodpeckers and finches. Much of the site is also covered in bluebells at this time of year so come and see our cottages in Wiltshire, a fabulous part of Britain.
