This idea came to me when I was sewing my flower and veg seeds on a dingy afternoon in February in Sussex.
I’m sure there are hundreds of gardeners like me who love to grow plants from seeds and I am sure like me they grow too many and cannot bear to kill them off!
So, I decided then and there to contact my gardening friends, (some of them had never grown from seed) and suggest we meet on a morning in late May when the frost danger has passed, to swap what we’d grown and to raise money for charity. My chosen charity was Demelza, which is a small charity in East Sussex working to help families with terminally ill children.
I explained that we would all put in £5 to join in the fun. We would all hopefully end up bringing 10 plants to my home and there we would swap and take away 10 different plants to put in our gardens.
I had an initial response from those keen to raise money for Demelza and then more replies in dribs and drabs, emails full of nervous promise to try and grow plants and bring them to my garden in May.
I sent a quick email at the beginning of May to remind everyone of the date and to tell what time to come. I had planned it for half term week as it was the week after The Chelsea Flower Show so there is a bit of garden fever about!
I was expecting 3 or 4 friends and there was a lovely stream of people from 9am til midday, lots of coffee and cake and good chats. Everyone was delighted with their plants and it was a thoroughly feel good morning.
Some came without plants so put extra money in the plant pot to buy some and donate – Mulberry Cottages is very kindly doubling this amount!
It was really worth doing, the sun shone and I will be doing it next year, all being well. Infact I would love to encourage any gardening groups to get together in May 2016 for the Great British Plant Swop to raise money for your chosen charity.
