Planning your next Bank Holiday? Lots of fun in Hastings…

If you don’t live in Sussex, you may not have heard of the fabulous event which is being held in Hastings on the May Bank Holiday weekend.  Hastings is a really busy fun place to spend a short break or longer holiday and the people of Hastings love to party!  With events such as the Mardi Gras, the Old Town Carnival Week, and Bonfire Night – you can see they are an unstoppable crowd of people!

May 1st has been an important date for hundreds of years.  In the 16th and 17th centuries, the English would make garlands of flowers and celebrate the coming of summer.  Milkmaids and chimney sweeps alike joined in the procession, different groups competing for the best dressed, the chimney sweeps made such a huge garland, it covered the whole person, this was the beginning of Jack in the Green.

The custom was revived in Hastings by Mad Jacks Morris Dancers in 1983 and has been growing ever since.  The residents of Hastings make an enormous effort and the results are quite extraordinary, green faces with green costumes, laughter and dancing in the streets, it really is a spectacle not to be missed!  There are lots of events planned over the Bank Holiday weekend, with a huge procession through the streets accompanied by music and fun.
