Mary and Andrew found a beautiful house in the Kingsgate village area of Winchester 11 years ago. The house and garden needed renovating and Mary being a keen gardener set to work creating an idyllic courtyard garden infront of the the old 1950s greenhouse. Mary could see the potential of the garage and greenhouse area immediately. The space lent itself to the addition of an elegant oak framed barn dropped into the existing outbuilding and so The Potting Shed was born.
After much toing and froing with the planning department because it’s in a conservation area, work began to develop this space which has made wonderful additional accommodation for the overspill of family and friends at the Dolman’s house along with a thriving business welcoming holiday guests to this historic English city.
Mary had a very firm idea of how she wanted The Potting Shed to be – a natural and simply furnished space of outstanding quality. ‘We have tried to use the best linen, goosedown duvets, pillows and of course high quality mattresses. I always put myself in their shoes’ Mary told us – and it seems to have worked a treat.
The barn structure reflects the fact that it was a working building with it’s beautiful beams – it has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
The Potting Shed is stunning, from the moment you enter the lovely garden, your senses are awakened with the scent and colour of the flowers and foliage.
The kitchen is simple and well equipped with Bosch appliances, the wooden effect flooring is in fact ceramic tiling from Fired Earth, so clever.
Upstairs, the bedroom doubles as a sitting room, plenty of space and again clever storage ideas. The Danish designed slatted oak bedside tables and bench double in size by pulling out the boxes underneath if required.
They were found locally in a lovely interiors shop and continue to reflect the green oak of the barn.
The sweetest of ensuite shower rooms has been created, using high quality ceramic ware and taps, and Mary managed to save on the tiles, which are an exquisite patchwork design and actually came from an online store.
She always leaves guests some beautiful shower gel, soaps and shampoo as she wants them to feel pampered.
Not only is this quirky holiday cottage an experience in itself, the location is perfect. The Potting Shed is your elegant base from which to meander into the centre of the cultural City of Winchester or simply stroll down the road to the famous Wykeham Arms “Town Pub of The Year” in the 2016 Good Pub Guide. Located in a wonderfully quiet part of the old city, the accommodation has been designed as a unique home away from home.
