The Daily Mail reported yesterday that the Queen, arguably the most accomplished of hostess’, has outdone herself but inviting a staggering 27 of her closest family to Sandringham this Christmas.
This record number of houseguests has prompted a certain amount of re-jigging in the royal house, with the disgruntled servants being packed off to the footman’s quarters from the bachelor’s wing, which previously has been used to house the servants from F (food) branch but is now being used to house the overflow from the Queen’s extensive guest list.
The Queen is used to entertaining over the festive period but guests are invited not before the morning of the 23rd. The family celebrates in the German tradition of a candlelit dinner on the 24th and the exchange of presents.
On Christmas morning they attend the service at St Mary Magdalene, the church on the estate. Back at Sandringham, they settle down to a traditional turkey lunch at 1pm before gathering around the television to watch the Queen’s Christmas broadcast at 3pm (which we can imagine being very odd for the queen herself!)
If like the Queen you have more guests than usual you may have to move your family around and make them share, not very popular in most houses, but it only happens once a year!
Alternatively, if you are thinking of a large gathering for Christmas 2012 let Mulberry Cottages house your whole party in ease and comfort – even the Royal Family would love it!
