Rye Scallop Week is coming up!

Get ready with your knives for a bit of shucking (the art of removing the scallop from its shell in plain English!).

Lots to explore in Rye

Lots to explore in Rye

From the 20th til 28th February, Rye will be buzzing with scallops. The local restaurants will be showcasing a variety of wonderful scallop dishes and this year there will be scallop events including cookery schools and demonstration, live music, quiz nights and more!

A scoop of scallops

Mouth watering scallops – yum

And here at Mulberry Cottages  since the New Year, we’re still trying hard to increase fitness, decrease fat and generally get healthier. We were very happy to find out that scallops are perfect food to help us along the way. Not only does a serving of five large sea scallops weighing 20 g each have a mere 111 calories, they provide high nutritional value. Plus – wait for it – they are rich in vitamin B12, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc and copper.  Added to this they are also an excellent source of phosphorus and selenium – wow!

Rye Bay Crew will be presenting a medley of scallops and music of the sea on Saturday 20th at 7pm,

The Ship Inn on The Strand will be offering a fabulous scallop taster menu for the more committed scallop fan on the Saturday nights.   They are also organising the What a Load of Scallops Race. For anyone who wants to enter – you‘ll need a team of between 2-4 of you and the general aim is to get a wheelbarrow full of scallop shells from the fisheries to the pub in the quickest time possible!
Entry is £10 per team. Race begins at 10am sharp. To get involved email The Ship Inn
At Webbe’s Scallop School you can enjoy a demonstration plus a 5 course taster menu at weekends during Rye Scallop Week. Paul Webbe will demonstrate the versatility of this prized mollusc plus entertainment such as Scallop and Wine at The George and even Scallop Bingo at The Standard!
