Swimming the English Channel

Last month one of our cottages in Stowting, Kent was base to a team of swimmers who after 9 months of preparation and 6 months of hard training swam the English Channel. The Zimbabwe Rural Schools Development Programme Channel Swim team crossed from England to France in 10 hours 13 minutes!

Support and donations have helped them raise well over £10,000 that will fund the building of a classroom block for students of Makowe School, Zimbabwe.

The swim started at 5:30am from Shakespeare Point, Dover in a force 3 – 4 with some seriously choppy water.

Early morning start at Dover for the swimmers

The team clocked up around 1.8 nautical miles each in the 15-degree water. This was an early morning wake up call like no other!

This challenge certainly wasn’t for the faint hearted as the team swam in the brown water and trying to dodge jellyfish -Fortunately they all came out unscathed!

The brave swimmers

As a team they swum around 24 nautical miles and had recorded the fastest relay swim of 2011.  Massive congratulations to you all including Jamie Drysdale, Angus Hodson, Richard Hogg, James Herbertson, Suzanne Gibson and Justin Hess.

The team spent the nights leading up to the challenge in Lymbridge Green, Stowting Common, Kent. This is a stunning 5 star newly built eco friendly house in a picturesque rural location offering luxury accommodation with great views and a 40ft heated swimming pool – perfect for the team to practice in before the marathon swim!
