The Tourism minister visits Dover

Sarah Wood from Mulberry Cottages met the Tourism Minister, John Penrose MP, whilst he was visiting Dover last week. He had requested to have a round table discussion with a small representative group of tourism providers.
He came on a fact finding exercise as Kent is very successfully running a public/private tourism partnership through Visit Kent, the marketing body tasked with promoting Kent as a tourism destination. With over 100 investor businesses working in all aspects of tourism from accommodation providers such as ourselves to large attractions like Hever Castle and companies with global appeal like P & O ferries and Shepherd Neame Brewery. The government are hoping to copy this approach across the country as they encourage businesses to invest in tourism to replace the funding reductions they are making.
The strength of Visit Kent came across and Sarah feels very strongly that if all counties followed the Visit Kent model we would all benefit. Their joined up professional approach means that all Kent investor businesses can attend events in a global way that they would not be able to justify on their own, benefitting both the county and the business involved.
All in all it is very encouraging, the government is listening to us tourism providers and believes that we are one of very few sectors that will grow over the next few years – a sentiment we heartily agree with as our staff have doubled in a year!
