Tips for a great value summer cottage getaway

We’re loving this summer weather with the long summer holidays stretching ahead, but wouldn’t it be great to be somewhere other than home?  It doesn’t have to cost the earth and we have put together some tips for creating a great value summer cottage getaway.

Choose self catering

Love catching up!

Love catching up!

It is much better value choosing a self catering holiday cottage rather than a hotel.  The fact that you can take food items from home and can put the kettle on rather than pay for a cup of tea makes life so much cheaper!  Children often don’t like the look of the menu in hotels, or just eat chips for a week (which is really annoying), so to be able to make sure they have their 5 a day, is a relief when on holiday.  Plus you can go and explore, find out how good that local pub is or by delicious locally sources ingredients from a farm shop and cook your own yummy feast.

If you have a dog, go for a pet friendly cottage

Get into a great book and you will be entertained for hours!  Find a comfortable spot in the shade, cold drink, plenty of ice and while away a few hours, you are on holiday, remember!

Prepare a few meals in advance

Family favourites

Family favourites win the day!  Perhaps a lasagne, or fish pie, chilli or tagine, so much easier, to pop it in the oven on a holiday day.

For local events, just pick up a free paper or go on the internet and see what’s on locally, there are often organised events which children can get involved in.  For sporty types, a local tennis court may only be a few pounds to rent for a fun few hours.  Pack picnic and head off to explore the countryside!
