Tips for hosting the easiest of garden parties

Although this week has brought the longest day of the year with it, we often don’t feel summer is truly underway until the first week of Wimbledon – and we’re nearly there.

Find a garden

Hosting your own garden party starts with a garden and that’s where we come in.  We’ve got an amazing selection of beautiful country houses with magnificent gardens, long borders to admire, croquet lawns, grass tennis courts and even outside kitchens.

Decoration

Well if it’s an English Summer Garden Party then you have to have bunting.  Bunting comes in all colours, but really adds to the light hearted country feel of the day.  Attach it to the side of the house and then drape over to a parasol, or add it to the entrance porch of the house, as a welcoming touch.  Colourful tablecloths, big floral cushions, picnic blankets placed around the garden under the trees and of course lighting is important.

Lighting

Strings of solar powered lights can be bought at DIY shops such as Homebase or B&Q and are essential for an summer evening garden party.  Hurricane lamps with large church candles ensure that they will be going well into the night.  It’s a good idea to light paths and here you’ll most likely find that old jam jars with large tea lights will do the job perfectly.

Drinks

Of course it has to be Pimms No. 1 or maybe prosseccio or champagne cocktails.  There should be plenty of elderflower cordial with sparkling water and soft drinks for those who don’t drink alcohol.  White wine and beers are popular on a warm summer’s day.  Children will love to make their own ‘mocktails’ with a selection of soft drinks that they can mix up.  They’ll love stirrers, slices of orange to decorate and plenty of ice cubes.

Food

Just keep it simple if you’re doing your own catering, everything cold buffet works well with plenty of strawberries and cream for pudding.  Many of our houses have caterer contacts so just ask our booking team for details when you found the holiday house of your choice.
