About The Retreat

"Try epically wild Dungeness, where many former fishermen's homes have been given Grand Designs-style makeovers. The Retreat is all on one level, with glass walls looking out to sea and room for 10 people. For kids, there's an awesome six-bunk room in its own wing, stocked with toys, plus two stylish doubles. Grandparents will like the effortless birdwatching (binoculars supplied), and everyone will love the contemporary wood-burner around which evenings inevitably revolve" - The Sunday Times Travel Magazine (April, 2018).

Come to your senses in weird and wonderful Dungeness. Amidst a brilliant bird paradise, an intriguing coast line and the dramatic back drop of the Dungeness Power station, stands the bright and brave The Retreat. A light, sensitively designed contemporary holiday home split in 3 parts, yet all inter-connected with each other, like man and nature. Inviting you and your family or friends to chill, relax, dine and laugh together.

The architect Guy Hollaway designed the house with open plan living areas with the aim of bringing the outdoors in. At the same time creating an uncluttered and spacious yet welcoming feel in the house that flows from one area to another. The house encourages you to discover sumptuous bedrooms behind sleek doors, hidden wardrobes behind white walls. The crème de la crème is a fantastic family room with 6 adult bunk beds, what a treat!

Rain or shine, Dungeness is great for coastal walks. So get your walking boots on for some bracing walks in a wild landscape, buy some super fresh fish en-route and stop for drink at the local pub, all on your doorstep.

The sky by night is a feast ... little light pollution, so look up to the sky.... count your lucky stars.

"A truly unique home in a beautifully surreal location. I cannot recommend this place enough. The light pouring through the enormous windows is simply stunning. We were lucky enough to experience a very mild day for February so could brave opening the sliding doors. Even when the weather took a turn for the worse during the rest of the weekend, we enjoyed staying cosy by the log burner and watching the weather whirl around us. A fantastic destination for a weekend of escapism. The owner is very helpful and welcoming too. Stay here, you won't regret it."

February 2017

"Just spent a long weekend at The Retreat - fantastic place! All the sounds were beautiful: birds, the wind blowing round the house, the toot-toot of the little steam trains and the sound of the sea. Always something to see even from inside the house. Every window tells a story. We watched a fantastic sunset across the open spaces, the lighthouse with a stormy sky behind it and the early morning sun across the sea. Everything we needed was there in the house. The Retreat was an oasis of calm to come back to when we had been out exploring the area."

"Staying at The Retreat is a unique experience. You're living in one of the most beautifully designed contemporary homes in the UK in the center of the eerie surroundings of Dungeness - a shingle desert with the most wonderful walks, a truly outstanding nature reserve, a miniature railway to transport you to nearby civilization."

2017

"We had an excellent weekend at The Retreat – a fantastic cottage that is super sleek in design, yet exceptionally comfortable with all its trappings of 5* touches. The surreal, picture window views over the flat landscape to the nuclear power station and lighthouses make it all that more unique and special. Dungeness itself is an amazing escape venue that was appreciated by the young and the not-as-young in our group. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay."
