Bedfordshire is one of England’s smallest counties but has so much to offer, for a start it’s flanked on the east and west by tourist hotspots such as Oxford and Cambridge and just a 35-minute train trip to the big metropolis of London.

Listen to the song thrush in Maulden Wood, ancient woodland which has stayed the same for centuries.

If you like the idea of a city or town break, there’s a great variety of towns to visit and of course accommodation in Bedfordshire. Bedford itself is renowned as having one of the finest riverside settings in the country. Milton Keynes with the largest covered ski slope in the country makes a great day out, there’s good shopping there too for those less sporty visitors.
Bedfordshire has plenty of museums to entertain and educate – at the British Schools Museum in Hitchin, you’ll be transported to a 19th century classroom and find out about the school day in those times – fascinating.
If you’re interested in history, you’ll enjoy visiting Leighton Buzzard, a market town with the Grand Union Canal running through it. The 13th century parish church, All Saints Church, has a 190-foot spire which stands out majestically on the skyline.
As well as wandering around the town when you visit, you can also walk along the canal footpath or venture into the local 40 acre Stockgrove Country Park which has beautiful lakes and walks in the woodland.
Another claim to fame is that the Great Train Robbery took place on its outskirts and the railway station was used as a location in the film ‘Robbery’.
